Clopay Faux Wood Garage Door in Popular Black Paint Finish Featured on This Old House 2020 Idea House

This Old House

Clopay’s® Canyon Ridge® carriage house garage door is featured on the This Old House “Cottage on the Cape” 2020 Idea House, which is now open for virtual tours online at thisoldhouse.com.

The 6th annual Idea House is a classic New England Shingle-style home in Eastham, Massachusetts that addresses two of the biggest challenges young home buyers face today: affordability and flexibility.

The modest 2,500 sq. ft. footprint was designed with flexible living spaces that can provide ways of generating income on the side, including a garage workshop, a home office, and a 430 sq. ft. rental apartment/guest suite.

Builder Matthew Cole of Cape Associates, Inc. invested in a tight, insulated building envelope to increase the home’s affordability, with innovative, energy-efficient products to make the house, healthy, safe, and smart.

The design team selected Clopay’s Canyon Ridge (5-layer) Intellicore® carriage house door, factory-finished in the new standard Black paint color, to match the coastal blue exterior with black windows. Superior Overhead Door in Lakeville, Mass. managed the installation.

The garage door’s durable, moisture-resistant composite cladding looks like real wood, but it won’t rot, warp or crack, an important long-term maintenance consideration with the home’s seaside exposure to salt air, high winds and cold winters.

The attached garage isn’t just a place to park the car. The interior is a fully-finished functioning workshop, which made Clopay’s Intellicore HFC-free insulation a smart, sustainable choice. Besides improving energy efficiency and year-round comfort in the garage, the insulated steel core makes the garage door stronger and quieter.

The Canyon Ridge door also has built-in wind-load reinforcement giving the homeowner peace of mind in knowing that the home’s largest opening is hurricane- ready when the garage door is locked.

With large, in-person gatherings on hold this summer, This Old House held the 2020 “Cottage on the Cape” Grand Opening celebration online.

Photo galleries, virtual tours, and a video series chronicling the home’s design and construction is on the TOH website.

The house will also be featured in the October issue of This Old House magazine.
