Each classroom is designed with a full-view VertiStack Clear sectional door accompanied by a separate floor-to-ceiling multi-pane window to maximize daylight and openness. The compact design of the door allows the classroom’s ceiling area to remain clear and open. By stacking its sections neatly above the opening, the door requires minimal backroom and eliminates overhead tracks.
For architects, this design prevents interference with overhead electrical, mechanical, or plumbing systems and leaves ample space for lighting fixtures and other design details. For energetic elementary school children and their teachers, it offers usable ceiling space to display lively art projects and visual aids that support learning. While used for classroom exterior openings in this application, VertiStack Clear doors can also serve as interior room dividers, allowing schools more flexible, adaptable use of classroom spaces.

Likewise, built-in gaskets between the door’s sections make it IECC compliant for air infiltration and contribute to reduced cooling costs and comfortable classroom temperatures. Each door’s aluminum framework is finished in a powder-coated black that quietly complements the framework of its neighboring multi-pane window to create a cohesive look.
“Full-view vertical stacking doors are an ideal way to bring the outside into the classroom,” said Kayla Lusk, president of commercial door supplier Overhead Door Systems, Inc., of Corona, CA. “They easily fit the design constraints in areas where you can’t have a track going through, and you get the clean aesthetics of a beautiful sectional door with paneling and glass. It’s a perfect blend of form and function.”
Lusk noted that the aluminum and glass door’s myriad colors, finishes, and glazing options made it easy to choose a look that matched the school’s architectural style. Its safety features also checked all of the boxes essential for an environment bustling with children.
Initially, plans for the elementary school specified a different type of door for the classrooms, but Lusk saw an opportunity to earn higher marks with a different product and manufacturer.

- Concealed photo-eye sensors. Hidden sensors in the door project an infrared beam across the doorway, stopping the door if an obstruction is detected. For example, if a child unexpectedly darts through the doorway while the door is closing, the door halts operation, helping prevent potential injuries.
- Motor covers to prevent access. Motor covers shield all moving parts and eliminate the risk of exposure.
- Wireless sensing edges on the door’s bottom bars. Sensing edges detect physical contact and reverse the door's movement. In scenarios where students or their belongings may inadvertently be in the path of a closing door, the feature activates to help avoid accidents or injuries by returning the door to its open position.
- Strap brake safety system. This critical component immediately engages if tension in the door's operating straps is lost, stopping the doors from falling or sliding unexpectedly. This system ensures that in the event of mechanical issues, the doors remain secure and stable.
