What’s New in Garage Doors from the International Builders’ Show

Garage Doors

Mar 2024

More than 76,000 builders, remodelers, architects and designers filled the Las Vegas Convention Center as the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) hosted the 80th NAHB International Builders’ Show (IBS) Feb. 27 - 29.

This milestone attendance is the highest since 2009, reflecting the positive outlook of the residential construction industry.

The Clopay team experienced the energy as we showcased a stunning portfolio of new garage door designs, including one specific game-changer in garage door operation and aesthetics, the residential Vertistack.

Indoor Outdoor Connections

Similar in style and construction to our modern Avante®, Vertistack is a durable aluminum and glass door that blurs the lines between indoor and outdoor living with floor to ceiling views. Only Vertistack has no cables, hinges or overhead track jutting out into the room. Instead, it has vertically stacking sections that are mounted on the wall above the opening to provide a clear, open ceiling space.

Vertistack has already been recognized by the commercial architectural community with a 2023 Architecture MasterPrize award and was named the Judges' Pick in Building Design + Construction’s 75 Top Building Products for 2023.

The unique design and quiet operation attracted quite a crowd eager to see it in motion.

Judging by the reaction during the show, builders and architects have already put Vertistack on their product spec bucket list.

According to Justin Evans, Clopay’s vice president of marketing, research shows that homebuyers prefer multifunctional outdoor spaces, challenging architects and builders to come up with creative solutions to meet that demand.

Pools and spas are still popular in higher-end homes, but what surrounds, supports, and serves them—from firepits with seating areas and outdoor kitchens to party barns—is gaining interest. “Vertistack is an ideal solution for those indoor-outdoor structures as well as garages and workshops where overhead clearance or storage space is needed,” says Evans.

Look for it to hit the residential market this summer.

Warm Up to Wood-Look Finishes

Wood-look doors without the upkeep are an easy way to add warmth, texture and contrast to any exterior. Clopay debuted two colors for the Modern Steel™ Ultra-Grain® Plank door: Espresso and Cedar. They will be available late spring along with additional new finishes, Natural and Barnwood.

Slim contemporary windows can be added for a Mid-century Modern look and feel.

All of these shades work well with the most popular siding colors including greens, blues, gray, black, and of course, white, as well as brick and stone facades.

The door design features digitally printed horizontal planks with a stained wood appearance on a low-maintenance, insulated flush panel steel. The planks vary in length for a woven look with no repeating pattern.

This versatile style complements mid-century, farmhouse, coastal cottage and transitional home styles with clean horizontal lines, simplistic pattern and a nice tonal variation for visual interest.

Eye-Catching Pattern Play

Color and pattern are another way to add visual interest to the garage. The Chevron design is a recent addition to our Canyon Ridge composite garage door line, shown here custom painted Sherwin Williams Blustery Sky.

The geometric motif comes in several patterns adding luxurious European character, similar to today’s flooring designs. Like all Canyon Ridge® doors, Chevron is offered in many sizes, nine colors, and the option to add windows or decorative hardware for customization.

The Canyon Ridge is a popular choice for builders along the coast who want to incorporate the charm and realism of natural wood into their plans but need a material that holds up to the humidity and salt air. The UV- and moisture-resistant composite won’t rot, warp or crack, and can be painted or stained.

The new kid on the block in our Canyon Ridge line is the Elements door – an entry level, paint-grade model with an insulated steel base topped with woodgrain composite overlays.

Dark colors like Black, Charcoal and Chocolate Brown are on the rise in the garage door category to match the popularity of deeper tones on windows and trim. Here it is shown in Sherwin Williams Iron Ore.

Looking at the latest trends in kitchen cabinetry design, furniture and wall cladding, horizontal is being turned on its head. Vertical slats are everywhere in the home.

Sun West Custom Homes chose a minimalist Canyon Ridge 5-Layer vertical pattern for the ultra-modern New American Home set in the Ascaya development outside of Las Vegas. The home was open during the show and can be toured virtually at https://tnah.com/.

With our Reserve Wood custom capabilities, we were able to design this jaw-dropping modern vertical slat garage door in Cedar with a custom stain. It is as substantial as it is eye-catching, and definitely turned heads during the show as something you don’t typically see on a garage but would love to come home to.

For those who may prefer to have their garage door blend into the exterior, another Reserve Wood custom door combining black acrylic and stained wood slats. It definitely looks like it could be part of the siding until it opens overhead.

Both doors are handcrafted 4-layer insulated construction factory stained and can be made to order.

That’s a wrap on the 2024 International Builders’ Show from Las Vegas! It’s always a great opportunity to see friends who use our doors on their projects. Thanks to everyone for stopping by.
