How to Make Your Commercial Door More Inviting

Commercial Overhead Doors

Nov 2024

When looking for an overhead door for your business, always start with function. Safety, efficiency, and security should be top priorities. But, commercial doors aren’t all utility. They can look great, too.

From colors and finishes to windows, frames, and trim packages, we have suggestions for giving your commercial door a more warm and welcoming look. These customization options will bring personality and pizzazz to your exterior for the best-looking business on the block.

Color and Finish Options

The Psychology of Color

Color is energy, and our reaction to it is all-encompassing. It can have a very real impact on your mind and your body. Since your overhead door is such a big part of your exterior, you want to get it right.

When selecting a shade, consider what emotion you’re looking to evoke. Opt for bright, warm colors for a positive and energizing vibe. Blues and greens foster tranquility, while neutral tones offer a sense of comfort and security.

Standard Colors Vs. Custom Colors

Clopay commercial doors are available in standard colors that range from neutral to warm and earthy. It’s best to avoid bright whites and grays. Instead, lean into muted or earthy tones like Almond, Desert Tan, Sandtone, Bronze, Mocha Brown, or Charcoal.

If standard colors aren’t giving you the right feel, Color Blast® for sectional doors will allow you to choose from a palette of over 1,500 Sherwin-Williams® hues. Rolling doors are available in 108 RAL powder-coat colors, a standardized selection that makes it easier to color-match pre-existing doors.

A Perfect Finish

The term "finish" can refer to the surface treatment of either the door itself or its hardware. Available finishes largely depend on whether your door is made of steel or aluminum. Similar to paint finishes or paint sheens used in your home, commercial door finishes protect against scratches and wear and can give your door a unique look and feel.

  • Anodized Finish: A non-corrosive oxide film that’s applied aluminum doors, leaving a clear, satin finish.
  • Mill Finish: This is metal in its "raw" state. This option is usually for aluminum and stainless steel doors.
  • Powder Coating: A surface finishing method for rolling doors that involves coating the door with dry powder followed by a curing process, resulting in a solid protective layer and a consistent color. This option is available in a variety of colors and glosses.
  • Omni Powder Coat Finish: This option allows you to easily color match rolling and sectional doors within a select palette of standard colors.

Trim Packages, Hood and Operator Covers

Trim packages and hood and operator covers are similar in functionality. They hide hardware and give your door a more polished look. The difference here is that trim packages are optional and hood and operator covers may be required to meet OSHA and UL 325 safety standards. Disguising your door's mechanics allow it to meld with the architecture of your building, and also work to keep employees and customers safe.

Windows, Custom Slats, and Glass Panels

It’s no surprise that expansive walls of windows are a trending feature in commercial building architecture. Harsh artificial light is disappearing into the past. Taking its place is a desire for natural light, visibility, and airflow.

Full-view windows paired with customized frames and curtain fenestrations are easy ways to brighten a space and connect it to the outdoors.

Let the light in

Full-view glass sectional overhead doors—like the ever-popular VertiStack® Clear Door and Architectural Series Doors—are taking center stage. Sections made of glass allow natural light to flood a space, creating a more welcoming environment. As always, available window and frames options vary based on your chosen door model.

For full-view sectional doors, glass will either be divided into smaller, individual panels with both single and double-end stiles, or center stiles will be removed to create space for solid glass panels. If you want privacy without sacrificing natural light, windows can be further customized with glazing.

Visibility and style

Sectional and rolling doors have very distinct visibility options. Sectional doors are made with separate horizontal panels. This design allows for the incorporation of glass panels for natural light and visibility. In contrast, rolling doors are made with a single curtain that coils above the opening. Slats can be customized with punched slots, an option that is used primarily for ventilation. Or, vision windows can be added to the curtain to boost the look and visibility of your door.

Your commercial door should look good and match the look and feel of your business. With a ton of options to choose from, you can craft a door that's unique and leaves a lasting impression. Whether you're into rolling doors, sectional doors, or a mix of both, there’s a door that will give customers and employees a warm welcome every time.
