2023 Residential Exterior Design Trends: Part 3

Garage Doors

Mar 2023

In part two of our design trends series, we talked about how adding stained wood as a third neutral, and staying within one color family for accent hues can add warmth and update monochromatic exteriors to reflect the new exterior color trends we are seeing today.

With so many products that mimic the look of wood, it’s imperative to focus on material and performance.

Trend #3: Find a (High-Performing) Faux

Faux wood garage doors are made using durable, weather-resistant materials. Couple that with strength, sustainability and realistic texture, and homeowners can design exteriors that don’t sacrifice function for aesthetics.

Steel garage doors with a woodgrain paint finish and composite doors are easier to maintain than wood, will perform better and will last longer.

The Canyon Ridge garage door has been a popular choice for builders along the coast who want to incorporate the charm and realism of natural wood into their plans but need a material that holds up to the humidity and coastal air. This is a moisture-resistant composite that won’t rot, warp or crack and can be painted or stained.

Canyon Ridge Chevron
The Canyon Ridge Chevron garage door is now available to order in 4 designs.

Canyon Ridge faux wood garage doors can fool even the most discerning eye. These are as close as you can get to the look and feel of real wood – in Mahogany, Clear Cypress and Pecky Cypress composite “species” – but they won’t warp, rot or crack. New to the line is the Chevron motif in 4 patterns.

Clopay is the only garage door manufacturer that offers fiberglass entry doors to complement our residential garage door designs and finishes, which is a real convenience for builders and architects. Customers tell us one of the biggest struggles they face is getting entry and garage door stains and glass to coordinate – especially if they are in the same sight line.

Black is still back -- as an accent color on windows, garage doors, siding and trim. Dark siding and trim evoke a modern vibe and makes for a more interesting design that will stand out from other houses on the block. Incorporating doors with windows breaks up the dramatic expanse with open, inviting details.

This custom builder used pattern to blend in and stand out at the same time. Composite planks with aluminum inlays on our Canyon Ridge Modern garage door add visual interest and natural highlights that draw your eye from left to right to the front entry and balcony color blocked with complementing stained cedar cladding.

Modern Steel
Modern Steel™ Ultra-Grain Plank door in the Coastal Grey finish.

Our new Modern Steel Ultra-Grain Plank door features digitally printed horizontal planks in two colors: Kona, which is a rich, dark brown; and Coastal Gray, a light finish that marries natural and subtle blue-gray undertones—offering a reclaimed wood appearance without the yellowing that can eventually come with wood. The introduction opens a new Clopay category of contemporary, low-maintenance insulated steel plank garage doors.
