One of the great features of the Gallery Collection is the selection of window options. Choose from our new Wrought Iron designs or plain glass in short, long and three arched styles, available with or without grilles. Grilles fit into the outside frame for easy installation, toe clean the glass or change the designs.
Headroom is the distance between the top of the door and the lowest point of the ceiling or any obstruction such as a garage door opener rail, pipes, or ductwork.
Clopay's standard colors for steel doors are white; sandtone (except ribbed, which is available in white or brown only), almond and brown on all models and in hunter green and gray on some models (see our Design Your Door). Our Coachman Collection and Grand Harbor Collection Doors are, for the base door, white, almond and sandtone and for the overlays, white. Our Gallery Collection doors are available in White, Almond and Sandtone. The aluminum frame of our Avante doors are available in White, Brown, Clear Anodized Aluminum, Anodized Black and Anodized Bronze. Custom glass and frame colors are available. Ask your Pro-Series dealer for details.
The window section can be placed in either the third (2nd from top) or the fourth (top) section
The lower the gauge, the thicker (and stronger) the steel. For example, 24-gauge steel is thicker than 27-gauge steel. However, a “sandwich” constructed door with two 27-gauge steel skins and a bonded insulated core is stronger than a “steel frame” door with a single 24-gauge steel skin.
Clopay's steel doors can be painted with any high quality exterior paint (Do not use oil based paints). Note: Click here for important information regarding the painting of a Coachman Collection door. Wood doors must be painted/stained prior to installation. Most models are available primed from our factory. For more details on painting and staining Click here. Clopay recommends wood doors be re-painted every 1 to 2 years (more frequent refinishing may be required in high moisture areas).

R-value is a measurement of thermal efficiency of a door, or how well it insulates. Insulation is an important factor to consider when purchasing a garage door. If you plan to spend a lot of time in your garage, or if you have a room directly above or adjacent to your garage, you will want to purchase a door that offers a high R-value. If your garage is not attached to your home, or you are not concerned with insulation, you can purchase a door with a lower R-value or no insulation at all.

This depends on what type of spring system that your new door will have. For extensions springs, a minimum of 10" is required for the door to operate. Torsion springs require 12". Remember, these amounts are for door operation only. If you are installing a garage door opener, additional headroom is required. Check with the opener manufacturer for additional headroom requirements.
Yes! Low headroom kits are available from your local dealer or retailer. If your door came with extension springs, the needed headroom can be reduced to 4-1/2”. Torsion springs systems can be reduced to 4-1/2”. For more information, please refer to the Low Headroom Options file listed on the Installation Manuals.
We sell exclusively through our network of distributors and they are best able to provide you with current prices. The price you pay for a garage door depends on a number of factors. The model, size, options and site conditions all influence the price of your door. In addition, most of our distributors also install the door for you and will provide you with an installed price. Consult our "Where to Buy" to find a distributor near you. Or specify your requirements in our interactive "Design Your Door" and email a request for a quote to the dealer of your choice.
Torsion springs are under high tension. Unwinding standard torsion springs requires specific tools and training. Due to the dangerous nature of this process, we recommend you contact a local door dealer to remove the tension from the springs.
The backroom is the distance from the garage door to the back wall of the garage. The door height plus 18" is required for proper door installation. Additional backroom is required for the installation of an automatic garage door opener.
Standard door widths are 8', 9', 10', 12', 14', 15', 15'6", 16', and 18'. Some models can be custom ordered in 2" increments (8'2", 8'4", 8'6", etc.). Check with your local dealer or retailer for custom width/model availability. Standard door heights are from 6' to 8' in 3" increments, except for 7'3". Most residential models are now available in extended heights up to 12". Check with your local dealer or retailer for custom height/model availability.
The rough opening should be the same size as the door you wish to purchase. The door fits against the opening from the inside. The rough opening should be finished with an exterior perimeter seal or stop molding to seal out rain and wind. For more information, please refer to the Preparing the Opening file listed on the Installation Manuals page
To avoid installation problems which could result in personal injury or property damage, use only the track and springs specified and supplied with the door. Do not attempt to reuse the old track, springs, or hardware. Failure to use all supplied hardware will void the factory warranty.
No! The wood anchor pad is needed only when standard torsion springs are used.
Yes! Failure to properly install opener reinforcement will result in damage to the door and will void the warranty. The reinforcement configuration differs depending on the model number and size of the garage door. Please refer to the installation manual supplied with the garage door for specific instructions. For more information, please refer to the Attaching an Automatic Opener to "Pan Construction" Doors Using Punched Angle file listed on the Installation Manuals page available here or Attaching an Automatic Opener to "Sandwich Construction" Doors Using Punched Angle available here
Normally a door will hang about 4 – 6 inches into the opening. This helps keep tension on the cable so it does not fall off the cable drum or pulley. If you have a door with an electric opener, it can be adjusted so the door is pulled completely even with the opening, if necessary, to provide additional clearance for a vehicle.
measurement from each side of the door opening, outward to the nearest wall or obstruction within the garage. Allow on each side of the door 3-3/4" for standard extension and torsion springs and 5-1/2" for EZ-Set extension springs to allow for installation of the track.
The door package includes the sections, track, spring assembly, and hardware required to install the door. Several additional items can be purchased from your local dealer or retailer to aid in installation. These items are: 1. Rear track hanger kit for attachment of the horizontal track to the ceiling in the back of the garage. Existing hangers generally can be reused. However, we do recommend that you inspect them to ensure they are in good condition and positioned properly for the new installation. 2. Stop molding or perimeter seal for the exterior sides and top of the opening. 3. Some models do not include the opener reinforcement bracket. This can be done with a reinforcement kit or it can be done with standard 13-gauge punched angle iron. See installation manual for details. 4. Low headroom hardware. This is required when there is limited headroom between the top of the door and the ceiling or roof rafters.
We offer garage doors to meet specific wind speeds. These doors have added steel reinforcement struts, upgraded springing and heavy-duty commercial grade track and rollers to meet wind speeds and gusts from 75 mph to 170 mph. Your local building department can give you information on which ratings your county requires.
For lock bars please refer to the Lock Bar Assembly Instructions file listed on the Installation Manuals page or available here. For a cable lock please refer to the Snap Latch Lock Assembly Instructions file listed on the Installation Manuals page or available here.

Your garage door is the largest moving object on your home, and we recommend that the Door Maintenance information in your installation manual maintenance is performed on an annual basis.
Our doors are designed to last, but some parts do occasionally wear out or become damaged. If you are reasonably handy and follow the instructions with the parts or in your installation manual, you can do some repairs yourself. Some of these parts include rollers, bottom seal, hinges, lift handles, windows and window inserts. While some homeowners have the skill and tools to handle it themselves, we recommend that replacing springs, door sections, tracks and operators should be handled by a door professional. See our Installation and Care and Teach Me About Garage Door areas on our website for additional information.
For all our steel and wood doors, yes! If we still manufacture the model number door you have, replacement sections are available from your local dealer or retailer. If your door was manufactured in the last 10 years, we can identify the model number fo your door by the 15 to 16 digit serial number on the interior bottom section of the door. Exposure to the elements over time will alter the color of the section; therefore it may not be a perfect match. Due to the custom assembly of the Coachman Doors, certain restrictions apply for replacing sections. Consult your local distributor for details.
We recommend you check with the opener manufacturer to ensure that the unit is equipped with all of the safety features required by law today to ensure the safety of your family. SPRINGS AND CABLES
Is the garage door designed to prevent the personal injury or property damage that could be caused by breaking springs? All Clopay extension spring garage doors incorporate an exclusive safety containment cable which prevents a snapping spring from flying free and causing injury or damage. On all Clopay torsion spring doors, the spring is installed around the torsion shaft so that, if a spring should break, it cannot snap free and cause damage or injury. To learn more, see Springing Systems.
Are you able to loosen the bottom brackets of the garage door? Conventional garage door bottom brackets are under extreme tension and can cause serious injury if deliberately or accidentally loosened or removed by someone inexperienced in garage door installation or maintenance. Clopay brand garage residential steel doors feature our patented Safe-T-Bracket™ which, under normal circumstances, cannot be removed while the door is under tension, thus significantly reducing the risk of serious injury.
Have you checked the spring on your garage door? Beware of old springs. Keep in mind that garage door springs are tightly wound and under high tension. Eventually, all springs will wear out and break, even high quality steel springs like those used by Clopay. A breaking spring that is not properly contained could lash out and strike property or people. Properly installed Clopay doors have containment cables on extension springs and the shaft on the torsion spring will contain the spring on these types of doors. If you have an older garage door, be certain your springs are inspected by a professional installer and replaced if needed. If your door has two springs, replace both, even if one is not broken. This will not only prevent any damage caused by the breaking of the second spring, but also keep your door working efficiently.
Are there any frayed or have worn strips hanging loose on the spring system? If the cables that attach from the spring system to the bottom bracket on either side of your garage door have frayed or have worn strips hanging loose, your cables are in danger of breaking, which could cause serious injury or property damage. Have the cables inspected immediately by a trained professional who is aware of the potential dangers from spring tension.
Is it a safety concern if the springs are noisy? Sometimes older springs become squeaky or make a chattering noise. The noise is caused by the spring coils rubbing against one another. This is not a safety concern and can be corrected with a spray-on lubricant.
To ensure safe installation, are the services of a professional installer required for standard torsion spring door installation? Manual winding of a torsion spring during installation or adjustment is extremely difficult and potentially dangerous. Until recently, torsion spring garage doors could be safely installed only by trained professionals. In March of 1998, Clopay introduced its EZ-SET® Torsion Spring System. Using a 3/8" power drill, now even do-it-yourselfers can safely and easily install or make adjustments to torsion sprung garage doors. If your torsion sprung door does not feature Clopay’s EZ-SET Torsion Spring System, please call a trained, experienced professional to make necessary adjustments.
GARAGE DOOR OPENERS
Does the garage door opener have a reversing mechanism and is it in working order? A faulty or improperly adjusted reversing mechanism on your garage door opener could cause damage to your car or even injure a child or pet that inadvertently gets caught in the way of the closing door. All garage door openers manufactured and installed after 1991 are required by law to have a reversing mechanism. Most openers can be installed by the do-it-yourselfer. However, Clopay recommends that you have your garage door opener professionally installed, and that it be checked periodically to ensure that the reversing mechanism is in proper working order. Reversing mechanisms activated by contact can prevent most potential damage or injuries caused by a garage door closing automatically. Properly working “photo eyes” now offer an added safety guard, but if bumped or jarred in any way, photo eyes may be disabled. Required on all garage door openers manufactured and installed after 1993, photo eyes are connected to the bottom of the track and reverse the door when an infrared beam is broken. Safety is improved because nothing actually has to make contact with the door before it reverses. Again, Clopay recommends that you have your garage door opener professionally installed and tested periodically to ensure that it is working properly.
Is the wall control panel mounted at least five feet above the floor? Children playing with the wall control panels of your automatic garage door opener can lead to accidents that might cause either personal injury or property damage. Clopay recommends that you educate your child about the potential dangers of playing with the wall control panel. As an added safety measure, we recommend mounting your wall control panel at least five feet above the floor, out of the reach of young children.
Are the remote controls for the garage door out of the reach of children? Accidents can occur when children play with the remote controls for an automatic garage door opener. Again, we recommend keeping your remote controls out of the reach of children and educating your children about the potential dangers associated with these mechanisms and the garage doors they operate.
Does the opener have rolling access code technology? Many homes have been broken into and burglarized by thieves using universal controls that open the garage door by reading the access code in the opener. Rolling access code technology is one way to protect your home, family and belongings against thieves and intruders. Rolling access code technology changes the code of your automatic opener after every use, so the thieves’ universal controls are rendered useless.
Do you have the garage door opener system properly attached to your garage door? Be sure your opener is attached to your door with an opener reinforcement bracket. Failure to properly install this will void the warranty on your door and cause damage to your door. Be sure you have the proper configuration, depending on your model and size of door and refer to the installation manual for specific instructions.
GARAGE DOORS
Can I install my own garage door? A “do-it-yourselfer” can install a garage door, if he has skills and tools to do so -- and, most important, if he has carefully and thoroughly read the installation instructions before beginning the job. However, many do-it-yourselfers attempt the job without fully comprehending the installation instructions. Being fully informed about garage door installation prior to starting the job can help prevent injuries and save considerable time. Remember that access to the garage will be unavailable for up to 8 hours during the installation process, so plan accordingly. Clopay provides complete educational materials, videos and toll-free customer phone support to help you with your installation.
Does your door go up and down smoothly when manually operated? A garage door that does not go up and down smoothly when manually operated probably has a spring system that is out of balance and could cause premature wear and tear on your door’s hardware (including the rollers and hinges). Depending on how worn the spring is, it may need to be adjusted or replaced. For greater safety and operating performance, we recommend calling a trained Clopay Pro-Series service professional.
Have you had your garage door professionally inspected in the last year? Your garage door is probably the largest moving part in your home and is typically used every day. Over time, parts can wear out and break, creating potential safety problems. Although there are some light maintenance duties and inspections you can perform yourself, Clopay recommends that you have your garage door professionally serviced at least once a year to ensure maximum safety and increase the life of your door. At the very least, you should periodically check your rollers, hinges and safety equipment to be sure they are fastened securely and in proper working order.
