Getting the Energy Tax Credits You Deserve

Mar 07, 2011

Here’s what you need to know about claiming up to $1,500 in energy tax credits if you installed a qualifying garage door or entry door in 2010.

  • The tax credit is equal to the sum of 30 percent of all qualified energy saving improvements combined (up to $1,500 max) made to your existing home from January 1, 2009 to December 31, 2010. Quick Math: If a new garage door costs $1,000, the applicable homeowner tax credit is $300.
  • You can’t claim a $1,500 credit for new windows in 2009 and a separate $1,500 credit for a new garage door.
  • The credit applies to the product only, not labor.
  • New construction and rental properties are not eligible.
  • You must claim the credit for the year that the project was completed.

Why is a tax credit more valuable than a tax deduction?
Deductions just reduce your taxable income. With a credit, you get a dollar-for-dollar reduction in your tax liability: If you earned a $1,500 credit, you pay $1,500 less in taxes.

Claiming the Credit

  • For eligible products placed in service in 2010, you need to file the 2010 IRS Form 5695 and submit it with your 2010 taxes by April 18, 2011.
  • Save your receipts and the Manufacturer’s Certification Statement for your records. You do not need to submit a copy with your return.

A Manufacturer’s Certification Statement is a signed statement from the manufacturer certifying that the product or component qualifies for the tax credit. Manufacturers should provide these certifications on their website.
