Garage Organization: Part Two

by ClopayAdmin

More inspirational ideas from The Big Book of Garages by home improvement author Tina Skinner.

Wall Systems
Today’s market offers all kinds of great storage systems that conceal clutter, organize tools, and keep the floor clear. The systems are easily assembled, easy to clean, and easy to reorganize as your needs change.

Slatwall Systems: Wall slat systems are designed to hold an impressive amount of weight, and come with a great variety of interchangeable hardware. Moreover, the finishes are easy to keep clean. Not only do you not have to paint your garage, you won’t need to finish the drywall if you’re installing wall slats.

Cabinetry: Cabinets specifically designed for the garage are the hottest trend in makeover improvements. Cabinets for the garage have to be able to withstand temperature extremes, since garages are rarely heated or air-conditioned. They should have durable surfaces that are easily cleaned, since they are inevitably opened and closed by dirty hands and gloves. And they need to be built to handle heavy loads, since they are likely to store tools and equipment.

The best thing about garage cabinets, however, is that the doors close and hide all those items that really don’t need to be on display for security and aesthetic reasons.

Overhead Systems
All kinds of wonderful devices are being invented for getting stuff up high, where you can get to it when you want it, but otherwise keep it out of the way. Some to consider beyond traditional overhead shelving, rubber storage containers and nets include simple pulley lifts, and even a hydraulic lift system.

Little Extras
Besides utility, a garage can have style. There are lots of new products coming online for the garage enthusiast, from specialty clocks and artwork to decorative wall finishes. Self-adhesive metallic molding or wainscot tiles are two materials that quickly clean up a garage interior.

April is National Garage Organization Month

by ClopayAdmin

No more excuses. The expert entity known as “they” have designated April as the official month to tackle the clutter that is keeping you from parking your car in its rightful spot inside the garage.

The idea of purging, cleaning and organizing after a long winter of just stowing stuff anywhere it fits can be overwhelming. Relax. A fresh perspective can help transform this annual spring cleaning chore into a fun home improvement project that will not only provide added living space, but also add $$$ to your home.

If Jay Leno’s experience on DIY’s “Garage Mahal” got you thinking, perhaps these ideas will motivate you to get moving.

Author Tina Skinner explored dozens of garages to help inspire readers to turn theirs into a showplace and compiled them in a new book called The Big Book of Garages. From simple upgrades that improve the appearance of your home, to incredible makeovers that transform the additional space into a “Garage Mahal,” Skinner highlights new options now available for doors, floors, and walls to make your own project a success.

Here are some of her suggestions for doors and floors.

Garage Doors Make a Grand Entrance
An investment in nice garage doors is touted as a major home upgrade, and smiled upon by realtors espousing the value of “curb appeal,” so it’s important to choose a door that fits your home’s architectural style. Let exterior details on your home like the shape and size of the windows, the style of the entry doors and even the finish on decorative fixtures influence the look of the garage door you select.

The atmosphere inside your garage space can be greatly enhanced with the addition of light-inviting windows. The temperature inside your garage will be greatly affected by the door, too. If you plan on using the garage as a workshop or recreation space, or have a room above or adjacent to your garage, you want to consider the R-value and the thickness of the door. R-value is a measurement of the thermal efficiency of a door. The higher the R-value, the better insulated the door is. Insulation can also help dampen noise from the garage.

Inspired Interiors
The number one improvement you can undertake in transforming the interior of your garage is sealing the concrete floor. Below is a list of options.

Concrete Stains & Paints: Masonry sealers are designed to penetrate the pores of the concrete for a waterproofing effect, and there are many that both stain and seal the concrete, creating a stronger surface and providing incredible visual effects.

Floor Tile Systems: Interlocking tiling systems can be snapped together or apart for quick and easy installation. You don’t have any glues or fumes to worry about, and you don’t need any tools. A single garage bay can be “repaved” in an hour or so, and the tiles can be picked up and move with you when you please. Most garages are level, but you’ll want to be sure that yours doesn’t have dips in it before you invest in tiles, though.

Garage Carpeting: Squares of indoor/outdoor carpeting can help hide unsightly stains, or protect a nice floor from leaks. Adhesive squares are a nice option that allows you to customize your colors and quickly create a floor that is friendly underfoot and eye-catching, and costs as little as $5 per square foot.

Professional Coatings: At the top end of the market are the commercially applied epoxy and polyurea finishes that effectively bond with the concrete and seal the floor. These are manufactured and designed specifically for the garage market, and come in a variety of attractive colors and finishes.

Next up: wall systems and extras.

Spring 2010 Garage Door Before and After Contest

by ClopayAdmin

Did you know that you can dramatically transform the look of your home just by replacing your garage door?

These homeowners found out firsthand and are reaping the rewards of improved curb appeal and energy efficiency. Check out their garage door renovation stories below.

And if you like what you see give them your online support by rating their makeover in the Spring 2010 Before and After Contest at www.clopaydoor.com/before-after-entries.aspx. $250 is up for grabs. Voting ends Friday, April 30, 2010.

S. GINAVEN: OSKALOOSA, IOWA

We decided to renovate our Carriage House in 2007. This stand alone building needed to be able to support the heating and cooling requirements for our garage and home office/theater. Our old grey wood panel garage doors offered no insulation and were in need of replacement. We decided on the Clopay Coachman Collection carriage house style garage doors constructed of steel and composite with an R-value of 6.5. These doors provide the turn of the century look for the period of our Carriage House.

We also were concerned with initial door openings, which are 6 ft 6 inches H x 8 ft W, the ceilings at 7 ft 6 inches. Clopay customer service worked with us on the space requirements needed. The garage doors hold up well from the abuse of a basketball court. We installed them ourselves, a little tricky, but not impossible!

D. ASBURRY: MESA, ARIZONA

I bought my house in 2007, with the original garage door being uninsulated and outdated. The main thing you see from the street in my particular neighborhood is the garage door and the fence. I bought a Clopay Ultra-grain Gallery Collection garage door and WHAT A DIFFERENCE it makes! It is simply beautiful and keeps out the heat and cold so well it is unbelievable. Extremely quiet, too. It is the only garage door like it in my development so my house stands out from the rest. I have had numerous neighbors and passersby stop and ask about it.
