Clopay® Showcases the Next Generation of Composite Carriage House Looks at IBS
    Cincinnati - 2/15/2008

Steel and composite carriage house doors continue to be a popular choice for the garage because of their looks, durability and energy efficiency.  Design flexibility is another feature to add to the list as homeowners are beginning to experiment with multiple rows of windows combined with various panel styles and hardware to create a custom look. Clopay showcased this emerging trend at the International Builders Show.

“This look is the next iteration in carriage house designs,” says Pat Lohse, vice president of residential marketing for Clopay. “Once a style takes hold in the marketplace, consumers naturally build on the trend to make it their own.”

Lohse adds that this look works particularly well on 12’ doors.

Clopay’s Coachman Collection combines old world charm with modern technology to give homeowners a low-maintenance alternative to the popular look of wood carriage-house style garage doors.

The doors look like wood, but are actually crafted of layers of steel and insulation topped with a wood grain finish PVC overlay. Nearly 70 standard door design combinations with optional windows and decorative hardware are available in three colors: white, almond and sandtone, to complement many architectural styles including mission, Shaker, traditional, French country and Victorian.

Steel carriage house doors are becoming a popular alternative to traditional wood doors because they are durable, insulated and won’t fade, rot, warp or crack, meaning they won’t need to be refurbished or replaced as frequently as a doors constructed from natural material. They provide a great solution for homeowners looking for products to improve the energy efficiency and sustainability of their homes – two important criteria in green building design – as well as its curb appeal.

Constructed using a four-layer sandwich steel method (steel + insulation + steel + composite overlay) the Coachman features optional 1- 3/8” or 2” thick insulation with a thermal break and R-values ranging from 6.5 to 9. Insulated windows are also available.

The heavy duty steel exterior creates a resilient, dent-resistant surface -- a key benefit to homeowners with children. A 5/8-inch coped composite overlay creates the appearance of a classic carriage house door.

The Coachman Collection is ideal for homes with attached garages or those with living space above the garage. The high R-Value helps combat energy costs and makes rooms over or adjacent to the garage warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer. It has such a significant impact that the Internal Revenue Service declared it eligible for a homeowner energy savings tax credit under the Energy Tax Incentives Act.

Sustainability takes on an increased level of importance in coastal areas and other regions susceptible to high winds because the garage door can literally preserve a home’s structural integrity during a storm or hurricane.

Coachman Collection doors are available with Clopay’s built-in WindCode® reinforcement system so homeowners can simply “lock and go” when a storm warning is issued. No “add-on” posts are required to secure the door.
